Oceanographic Campaign 1987-88, Data Report (1994) III. Phytoplankton spatial distribution and species composition, related to environmental factors, for the first time on a large area of the Ross Sea, were investigated (Jan-Feb 1988). Results concerning spatial distribution of phytoplankton density and coenoses have already benn discussed by Nuccio et al. (1992). It can be useful to point out here the main floristic characteristics: the dominance of diatoms (mostly Nitzschia sec. Fragilariopsis spp. and Nitzschia sec. Nitzschiella sp.) particularly in the upper layer (0-25 m) and Phaeocystis pouchetii at 50 m, as Smith et al. (1990) underline; the conspicouous presence of naked dinoflagellates; the general dominance of nanoplanktonic fraction.
