The present study describes the methodologies to be adopted for estimating the damage caused to forest areas by fire and their application to a case study, i.e. the Monti Pisani fire (Tuscany, Italy) that burnt about 198 hectares in September 2009. The estimate process of fire damage is characterized by short time available for the estimation, and limited availability of technical and financial means. The results showed that fire damage affected private owners (75% of economic loss) more than the community (25%), even when including the positive externalities that private forests provided to local population. The negative (environmental and economic) effects affected the whole community, thus suggesting the importance of prevention activities in reducing the impact of environmental disasters and consequent costs in the rural areas.

Abstract
The present study describes the methodologies to be adopted for estimating the damage caused to forest areas by fire and their application to a case study, i.e. the Monti Pisani fire (Tuscany, Italy) that burnt about 198 hectares in September 2009. The estimate process of fire damage is characterized by short time available for the estimation, and limited availability of technical and financial means. The results showed that fire damage affected private owners (75% of economic loss) more than the community (25%), even when including the positive externalities that private forests provided to local population. The negative (environmental and economic) effects affected the whole community, thus suggesting the importance of prevention activities in reducing the impact of environmental disasters and consequent costs in the rural areas.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
