The analysis of high-frequency propagation of radio signals inside a railroad tunnel is of great importance for broad-band channel characterization and the design of suitable devices allowing wireless communication to be maintained when the train is inside the tunnel itself. Reinforced concrete walls often present periodic distributions of steel bars, which can be efficiently analyzed by means of Floquet theory. In this contribution this theory is used in conjunction with a ray-tracing algorithm to realize an accurate numerical field prediction tool.

Abstract

The analysis of high-frequency propagation of radio signals inside a railroad tunnel is of great importance for broad-band channel characterization and the design of suitable devices allowing wireless communication to be maintained when the train is inside the tunnel itself. Reinforced concrete walls often present periodic distributions of steel bars, which can be efficiently analyzed by means of Floquet theory. In this contribution this theory is used in conjunction with a ray-tracing algorithm to realize an accurate numerical field prediction tool.
