The L3 detector is one of the four LEP detectors which are now being assembled at CERN. The Florence collaboration is responsible for the external part of the L3 hadron calorimeter known as Muon Filter. A Z coordinate readout of the Muon Filter chambers would allow this part of the L3 detector to have a full position readout. For this purpose the application of charge repartition has been investigated. The effect of low-valued decoupling capacitors has been studied, using a simplified electrical model of the chamber, with special emphasis given to the problem of charge equilibration and the way this process affects the precision of the method. Measurements have been made, and the resolution obtained (σ = 2.5%) closely corresponds to that expected from the calculations made. © 1990.
