Abstract This paper presents a generalization of the method introduced in Pietrini and Torricelli-Ciamponi (1990) to model the evolution along z of jetlike axisymmetric structures. In this paper we allow for different radial profiles at different z distances from the nucleus, building up a step-wise structure which, in the limit of 'small' steps, can approach a continuous one. The influence of initial conditions in this kind of model is carefully analyzed, leading to the conclusion that some initial configurations prevent the existence of a 2D magnetic axisymmetric structure suitable for describing extragalactic jets. Intensity and polarization distributions associated with this kind of model are computed and turn out to be in accordance with the observations. As an example, the jet of 3C 31 is qualitatively described using a four-step structure.
