During the second half of the 17th century European relationships with the kingdom of Siam were particularly deep. Diplomatic initiatives and missionary activities, especially on the French side, produced a large amount of publications, in which the problems of cultural dialogue clearly emerged. Following the writing of travellers and missionaries, like De Bourges, Forbin, Tachard or La Loubère, this essay tries to remark the specific difficulties of an intercultural dialogue in this context, focusing on the problems of toleration and comparison between different religious traditions and attitudes.

Abstract

During the second half of the 17th century European relationships with the kingdom of Siam were particularly deep. Diplomatic initiatives and missionary activities, especially on the French side, produced a large amount of publications, in which the problems of cultural dialogue clearly emerged. Following the writing of travellers and missionaries, like De Bourges, Forbin, Tachard or La Loubère, this essay tries to remark the specific difficulties of an intercultural dialogue in this context, focusing on the problems of toleration and comparison between different religious traditions and attitudes.
