A significant tract of the water distribution network of the Florence waterworks which purifies surface water grom the Arno river, was monitored. Physiochemical and microbiological parameters were made on a total of 66 samples of water. It was found that bacterial growth values were constant with the excetion of a point at the end of the network which experienced a lowering of chlorine and temperature variation. The most commonly isolated bacteria belonged to the families Pseudomonadaceae, Bacillaceae, Micrococcaceae and Enterobacteriaceae as found by other authors. Staphylococcus hominis, S. warneri, Ps. maltophilia and Bacillus spp. were commonly found in the network.
