The presence of chemoautotrophic ammonia axidizers was investigated with 165 rDNA oligonucleotides in cultivated and in 25 year uncultivated vertic cambisol plots, and their related potential nitri$ing activity was evaluated. The data indicated that different agricultural practices do not affect this microbial populatio4 while have an effect on their ammonia oxidizing activity.
