This study focuses on the H2S and CH4 emissions, , with the aim to study how it is possible to reduce their impacts by means of biofiltration. In particular, it was studied how to develop biofiltation systems, which are the appropriate materials, which are the ideal environment conditions for the bacteria growth and which conditions affect it. In this research, a pilot study has been implemented and monitored in Casa Rota Landfill (Tuscany, Italy): the daily cover area, characterized by high emissions, was covered with four different bio-covers. The experimental plots have been monitored in two principle measurement cycling: the first, in the first year of experimentation, to study the short period activity; the second, in the last months, to test the long term behaviour. In the first measurement cycle, the esteemed methane removal efficiency prove that best results are gained in the mixed compost biocover, while in the long period the results obtained show an efficiency of removal of methane and hydrogen sulphide still good.
