In this paper, the authors revisit the history of modern Tunisia from a social and indentitarian perspective, trying to unravel the mechanisms inherent to the dynamics of dictatorship that Tunisians have endured. Taking a broader view, the issue of Arab-Muslim identity has been at the center of international debates, especially after the terrorist attacks of September 11, and a year after the fall of the authoritarian regime of Ben Ali, it also occupies the center of the public debate in Tunisia. Could we consider that Tunisia is passing through an identity crisis after the liberation from dictatorship ? The authors, attempt to rethink the political dynamics that have influenced the approach to identity, understood as a set of political, religious and socio-cultural dimensions, and considering that the Tunisian society seems to be already passed through modernity and now instead is questioning its premises and its objectives.
