The publication is a primary work, developed by the Architecture Department of the University of Florence and is entirely dedicated to the refinement of both methodological and operational restoration works of the old town centres in Abruzzo, damaged by the earthquake of April, 6th 2009 (from l'Aquila to the surrounding districts within the crater). The volume is furthermore a collection of results deriving from researches carried out in view of the reconstruction of the old town of Casentino, in the district of Sant'Eusanio Forconese, which was the object of the Post-earthquake Plan of Reconstruction. This site has been taken as an emblematic case, given its particular environmental value, as well as for the peculiarity of the suffered damage. Notwithstanding the operations of redevelopment, rehabilitation and prevention of the old town, still after all the emergency years the location is awaiting the opening of the construction site for the recovery of the building heritage, as well as for the security maintenance, the environmental improvement, but also to increase the value of the existing cultural resources. The work can be considered a collective volume of a multidisciplinary nature, to which contributed experts, scholars and teachers from the University of Florence, guided by one and only leadership. The results showed original guidelines of intervention, regarding also debris and rubbles recycling. The publication aims to provide the local communities and the architects with a technical instrument, in order to develop to the best the recovery works, both on an urban and architectural level. In short, it is a sort of “code of practice” whose purpose is to lead the works of survey, analysis and diagnosis for conservation and restoration measures. It also aims to report the 4-year activity and experience on site and the debates about the post-earthquake reconstruction. Besides, it might be useful to monitor the critical evaluation of the appropriate measures that in the future would hopefully make safer a territory at a high seismic risk.
