The paper summarizes the results of a study aimed at identifying how to achieve the future sustainable management of sediment and channel processes along the Serchio River (northern Apennines, Italy). Data collection and methodologies included a: (1) retrospective study of the past trajectories of channel adjustments; (2) quantification of a sediment budget by using bedload equations; (3) synthesis of bed-level evolution based on an integration of diagnostic information obtained from the previous phases; and (4) definition of the guiding principles and actions for sediment management.

Abstract

The paper summarizes the results of a study aimed at identifying how to achieve the future sustainable management of sediment and channel processes along the Serchio River (northern Apennines, Italy). Data collection and methodologies included a: (1) retrospective study of the past trajectories of channel adjustments; (2) quantification of a sediment budget by using bedload equations; (3) synthesis of bed-level evolution based on an integration of diagnostic information obtained from the previous phases; and (4) definition of the guiding principles and actions for sediment management.
