In the present work, sediments of different age (pre-mining, syn-mining and post-mining) were sampled in order to: (i) reconstruct the history of Hg(As) diffusion in this region; (ii) identify a geochemical marker for sediment quality; (iii) establish the Hg(As) background. Main geochemistry, Hg and As concentrations were analyzed by multivariate analysis. On the base of Hg contents in pre-mining sediments, a preliminary Hg regional background of 2-6 µg/g was set up, which largely exceeds the Hg established contamination level of Italy (1 µg/g).
