Codice diplomatico di Giovanni Boccaccio. 1. I documenti fiscali

Il contributo presenta la prima parte del Codice diplomatico di Giovanni Boccaccio, costituita dai documenti fiscali che lo riguardano. Si tratta di novanta testimonianze (datate 1349-1375) quasi tutte inedite o addirittura fino a oggi sconosciute, che sono emerse grazie a una specifica indagine condotta presso l’Archivio di Stato di Firenze. L’edizione delle fonti è preceduta da un’ ampia introduzione che propone alcuni cenni sullo stato della documentazione e sulla fiscalità fiorentina dell’epoca, ripercorrendo poi le testimonianze rintracciate. Il dossier non solo fornisce notizia sulle condizioni economiche di Boccaccio, ma restituisce anche i tratti della sua coscienza civica, estranea alle manovre speculative favorite dal sistema fiscale fiorentino. This paper presents the first part of the Codex diplomaticus of Giovanni Boccaccio, composed of fiscal documents relating to him. There are 90 documents, dated between 1349 and 1375, mostly unpublished or even unknown hitherto; they have come to light as a result of targeted research in the Archivio di Stato in Florence. The edition is preceded by an introduction offering some account of the condition of the documents and of Florentine fiscal procedures of the time, as evidenced by the material collected. The dossier not only informs us about Boccaccio’s financial circumstances but shows how he regarded his duty as a citizen, in contrast to the speculative operations favoured by the authorities.
