Bringing up to standard of school buildings is a particularly important theme nowadays, as testified by the recent funding programs of the Italian government and by the actions which are aimed to update the reference standards. The following contribution shows a method for the verification of ac- cessibility and safety conditions in redevelopment projects of school buil- dings. Included in the complex and articulated field of the verifications of environmental sustainability, the method can be used to check both the standard references and a certain kind of design solutions, which are considered more effective than the purely prescriptive application of mandatory law. The aim is to analyze those components which increase the comfort and hospitality of spaces, if compared to an enlarged demand. Such components must be seen as cornerstones if the intention is to encou- rage among the students the sense of belonging which is the basis of a “modern” educational approach.
