Sixteen microsatellite (SSR) loci were used to estimate genetic diversity of Libyan date palm’s resources. We focused our attention to Al Jufrah oasis on 29th parallel which represents one of the most interesting Libyan regions for palm date cultivation. A high level of polymorphism was detected across 18 cultivars from five localities within the oasis. The totality of local cultivars were univocally and easily identified simply with three SSR markers so confirming SSR as an effective method for cultivar identification. The possibility to assign the unknown male plants to a cultivar was also considered in the analysis.

Abstract

Sixteen microsatellite (SSR) loci were used to estimate genetic diversity of Libyan date palm’s resources. We focused our attention to Al Jufrah oasis on 29th parallel which represents one of the most interesting Libyan regions for palm date cultivation. A high level of polymorphism was detected across 18 cultivars from five localities within the oasis. The totality of local cultivars were univocally and easily identified simply with three SSR markers so confirming SSR as an effective method for cultivar identification. The possibility to assign the unknown male plants to a cultivar was also considered in the analysis.
