What do we mean when we raise the issue of the relationship between mathematics and culture? This chapter suggests an answer to this question that relies on the evidence provided by some of the earliest extant Chinese mathematical sources. My claim is that these documents bear witness to a way of doing mathematics that lasted for some centuries and that is specific —that is, specific at least to a given scholarly tradition that developed in ancient China.

Abstract
What do we mean when we raise the issue of the relationship between mathematics and culture? This chapter suggests an answer to this question that relies on the evidence provided by some of the earliest extant Chinese mathematical sources. My claim is that these documents bear witness to a way of doing mathematics that lasted for some centuries and that is specific —that is, specific at least to a given scholarly tradition that developed in ancient China.File in questo prodotto:
