The Solitude of Places. Journeys and Architecture on the Edges

La Sardegna è una terra che possiede la straordinaria capacità di comprimere lo spazio e il tempo: nella sua storia millenaria, questo è fluito via impercettibilmente, salvaguardando ciò che altrove è andato perduto. THE SOLITUDE OF PLACES. JOURNEYS AND ARCHITECTURE ON THE EDGES è un viaggio in luoghi ai margini rispetto alle tradizionali mete del Grand Tour, attraverso lo sguardo esterno di alcuni scrittori che seppero ritrovare in essi la magica topografia necessaria al racconto di un’esperienza autobiografica e di alcuni straordinari fotografi – August Sander, Giuseppe Pagano e Henri Cartier-Bresson – che cercarono di costruire a partire da essi un inedito «vocabolario di immagini» capace di raccontare un mondo arcaico che lentamente si apriva alla modernità e alle sue inevitabili contraddizioni. Alcune piccole architetture completano il percorso conoscitivo di un paesaggio d’ombre e solitudini apparenti, in cui, per citare David Herbert Lawrence, «nulla è finito» e «nulla è definitivo». JOURNEYS AND ARCHITECTURE ON THE EDGES is a journey to places on the edges of the traditional destinations of the Grand Tour, through the external gaze of some writers who were able to find in them the magical topography necessary for the telling of an autobiographical experience and some extraordinary photographers – August Sander, Giuseppe Pagano and Henri Cartier-Bresson – who tried to build from them an unprecedented «image dictionary» capable of narrating an archaic world that was slowly opening up to modernity and its inevitable contradictions. Some small architectures complete the cognitive path of a landscape of shadows and apparent solitudes, in which, to quote David Herbert Lawrence, «nothing is finished» and «nothing is final».
