The transformation of the uninhabited island of Poveglia in Venice into a low energy education and research campus is the objective of the present work. The project integrates many energy strategies to develop an international campus in one of the most suggestive locations in the Venetian Lagoon, and creates the conjunction between Natural and Cultural systems, with the intention to reduce energy consumption and exploit the natural resources of the Island. Natural system: the Venetian Lagoon is a unique and incomparable natural system, strengthened by piling, canals and complex hydraulic engineering planning. The project of the International campus uses materials for the architectural solutions, able to face environmental conditions, using sun, wind, and water to reach the highest self-sufficiency level. Cultural system: the charm of Venice is recreated by the requalification of the island natural context and the existing buildings. The planning includes: - Classrooms and laboratories - Library and reading room to support the everyday study, research and social relationships activities of the campus students. - Canteen and cafeteria are designed to have a wider range of users, such as tourists and citizens who will spend their free time on the island, either in its green areas or facilities. - Student accommodation of the international campus offers residences with private apartments and multiple-bed rooms with shared toilets, in order to meet different needs and include various commercial opportunities. - Exhibition areas are designated for students’ and professors’ learning and laboratory activities and exhibitions. They are open to the public and serve as a connection to the wide cultural activities of Venice. - Multi-purpose areas include studying areas and spaces designed for the community and the student associations admitted in the campus - Sport facilities include gyms, playing fields, water sports in the Venetian Lagoon (canoeing, sailing, water skiing etc..) - Auditorium Hall is an area designed for highly attended events (meetings, art performances, film showings etc…) The paper deals mainly with smart energy technologies, high quality smart building envelope, renewable energies integration and dynamic simulations used for the design of the students’ accommodation of the –international campus.
