Una storia senza nomi. Storia e memoria a Firenze ai primi del Duecento

This article compares the information in the oldest historiographical work from the city-state of Florence – the Gesta Florentinorum, written in the early 13th century by the judge and notary Sanzanome – with testimonies taken down in several judicial trials from the same era, finding remarkable similarities between the two. For example, the chronological references mentioned in both sources are identical (the same battles and the same sieges), and it may be that these similarities (in content, lexis, and even style) stem from the fact that both Sanzanome and the witnesses in the judicial investigations belonged to the same social group – the milites and domini loci – characterized by a strongly felt identity.
