Nella prima parte, dopo un'introduzione alla figura dell'ebreo nel teatro della prima età moderna, si studiano le principali rappresentazioni del settecento, a partire dall'adattamento di Granville, e dell'ottocento (Kemble, Cooke, Macready, Edumnd Kean, Charles Kean, Henry Irving). Nella seconda parte vengono analizzzati le riscritture e gli adattamenti del dramma dopo a Shoa. The book studies two important moments in the stage history of the Merchant of Venice, the 18th and the 19th centuries,and post-2WW theatre. In the first part of the book, after a survey of the character of the Jew in Early Modern English Theatre, -starting from Granville's adaptation -, the book focuses on 18th and 19th centuries productions, such as those of Kemble, Cooke, Macready, Edumnd Kean, Charles Kean, Henry Irving. The second part of the book deals with post-holocaust rewritings and adaptations of the play.
