The wild-type strains of Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 and Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 were cultivated to evaluate their potential in outdoor mass culture. In the first experimental step, the two strains were grown outdoors in 10-L GWP® photobioreactors to confirm the results obtained in laboratory trials. Productivity was strongly reduced by low temperatures in Synechococcus PCC 7002, while both strains have shown to be euryhaline. Cultures were then scaled-up starting from 7-L tubes, then to 40-L GWP®-III photobioreactors and finally to a 1.4 m 3 GWP® -II photobioreactor.
