Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) play a leading role in road safety. In some scenarios, the intervention of such systems allows to avoid crashes with different kinds of vehicles or obstacles. Impacts are, however, not avoidable in all circumstances, as when environmental elements contribute in limiting the effectiveness of sensors (low aperture and/or field of view). In the manuscript an approach for the adaptive activation of ADAS is described; the case in which a vehicle, by an ADAS, can directly control the braking action and the steering angle in a possible vehicle-to-vehicle impact scenario is referred to. For each instant, a best configuration of the intervention parameters is determined and adopted, corresponding to the one minimizing the probability of crash and, in case the collision is inevitable, the Injury Risk (IR) for the occupants; the sequence of optimized activations converges towards the best outcome in terms of evitability and IR.
