The Villa was born as a "casa del signore" in 14th century and from 1538 to the end of the century was re-designed by Cosimo I and his son Ferdinando I. The Castello's garden constitutes, with Villa d'Este at Tivoli, one of the most important example of the "formal garden" in Renaissance Italy.
