The idea for this manuscript emerged from a series of seminars organized by the University of Florence Jean Monnet Center of Excellence1 and held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences between 2017 and 2019. The purpose of the seminars was to bring together experts from different countries and disciplines in order to discuss Europe’s recent social challenges. The seminars produced some very insightful debates about the current path of the European project.
