Old symbols, new meanings: Urban redevelopment project for the former San Salvi Psychiatric Hospital of Florence.

In Europe, the closure of psychiatric hospitals, starting in the late 20th century, raised the problem of the architectural and urban redevelopment of the areas of former psychiatric hospitals, places of great historical and architectural value both for their morphological and symbolic features. This urban redevelopment project of the former San Salvi psychiatric hospital in Florence by a research group of the Department of Architectural Design of the University of Florence recognizes the former Florentine hos- pital as “integrated cultural heritage,” made up of tangible and intangible assets.
