What happened to the city? What should we understand when we say 'urban'? Do the suburbs still exist? What do suburban mean in the Italian context and in Tuscany in particular? International literature offers us new definitions and interpretations that refer to a substantial overcoming of the urban and suburban model of the twentieth century. In this volume, we try to answer these and other questions on the issues of sustainability, habitability, and governability of large Italian urban areas and in particular of the urban heart of northern Tuscany. To answer these questions, the book investigates the urban phenomenon through three main questions: trends in urban development, infrastructure, and regional governance. The book collects the research contributions of a collaboration project of the Critical Planning & Design Laboratory with the Metropolitan City of Florence launched as part of the international collaboration with the research group "Global Suburbanism" of the York University of Toronto.
