The 11th International Conference on Vibration Problems (ICOVP-2013) was held in Lisbon, Portugal, between the 9 and 12 September 2013. This conference was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculdade de Cieˆncias e Tecnologia of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (DEC/FCT/UNL) and IDMEC – the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Te´cnico of the University of Lisbon (IDMEC/IST/ UL). The conference was hosted at the Instituto Superior Te´cnico and promoted by the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science and by the Associac¸a˜o Portuguesa de Mecaˆ nica Teo´ rica, Aplicada e Computacional. The conference was attended by 400 participants from 50 countries. The largest groups were from Brazil (46), Germany (44) and Portugal (33). As the conference embraced vibration issues in all fields of engineering, several mini-symposia were organized related to rail transportation and related topics, namely: . MS14: Vibration of solids and structures arising from moving loads (organizers: Piotr Koziol and Zuzana Dimitrovova´ ); . MS16: Dynamic analysis of high-speed railway bridges (organizers: Ricardo Figueiredo Vieira, Francisco Virtuoso and Luis Guerreiro); . MS23: Vibration induced by road and railway traffic (organizers: Pedro Alves Costa and Mohammed Hussein); . MS30: Railway vehicle vibration characteristics based on different structural and suspension parameters (organizer: Yan Li). This Special Issue contains the contributions to the conference that are most relevant to readers of the Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit.
