After recalling the main literature on the varieties of capitalism, this chapter presents the state capitalistic model which characterized countries from both the developed and developing world. We focus on the economic and social rationales for the direct government provision of various services of general interest through its owned enterprises. We discuss the crisis of this model experienced at the end of the last century. It reviews the political and economic rationale for promoting a process of privatization and market opening. The chapter describes the new revival of state capitalism that has taken place in various areas after the privatization and liberalization reforms.
