The earliest representatives of the group occurred during the Early Miocene. The group is well documented during the Late Miocene in Western Eurasia and Africa. High species diversity occurred in Eurasia during the Pleistocene. The fossil records of Rhinoceros and Dicerorhinus seems to be confined in the Indian subcontinent and East and South-East Asia.
