Triangulation in qualitative research, in: Qualitative, Multimethod, and Mixed Methods Research. International Encyclopedia of Education 4th Edition, XI Volume

This contribution provides an outline of the concept of triangulation, of its early definitions and uses and of some of the most relevant theoretical and methodological controversies characterising its development in the last decades. Having reviewed some of the recent uses, abuses and developments of the term triangulation, this contribution illustrates two examples where the use of methodological triangulation shows all its potential: the first example combines theoretical, data, and methodological triangulation, and the second one includes an interesting and innovative example of investigator triangulation.
