As social networks in medieval cities were numerous, overlapping and ever-changing, they are not easy to investigate. In order to do so, it is necessary to focus on the written acts which legally formalised these networks. The pacts written in these documents built communities that scholars have nearly always interpreted as consolidations of family relationships, although they often also served to unite strangers.
