On Stumpf and Schlick

The extracts directly concerning psychological issues are considered by Schlick himself as «incidental remarks» within the general framework of the theory of knowledge developed by Schlick in Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre. Nevertheless, Schlick’s knowledge of psychological questions turns out to be far from superficial, and this is particularly true with regard to Stumpf. The paper intends to focus on those aspects pertaining to Stumpf’s perspective that Schlick both appreciated and criticized. In particular, the paper will concentrate on the concepts of psychic function, sensation (Schlick accuses Stumpf of «psychological atomism»), and contents of consciousness, showing that Schlick’s Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre can be regarded as an important moment in the history of Stumpf’s reception.
