The term "statement" implies a semantic history that is diachronically analyzed in the contribution. In the history of bibliographic language, statement has experienced a progressive semantic dilatation and shift: at first it has the meaning of allegation, declaration; later it takes on the meaning of: indication or signing; finally, it connects "the action of stating" and "the manner in which something is stated."ISBD is a specific case study; the different positions of Luigi Crocetti and Diego Maltese as to the translation into talian of the term underlines its semantic complexity and the difficulty in identifying the most appropriate translation. Il termine "statement" sottende una storia semantica che viene analizzata diacronicamente nel contributo. Nella storia del linguaggio bibliografico, statement ha vissuto una progressiva dilatazione e spostamento semantico: all’inizio ha il significato di allegation, declaration; successivamente assume l’accezione di: indicazione o segnalazione; infine, connette «the action of stating» e «the manner in which something is stated». Caso di studio specifico risulta ISBD; le diverse posizioni assunte da Luigi Crocetti e Diego Maltese in merito alla traduzione del termine in italiano sottolineano la sua complessità semantica e la difficoltà a identificare il traducente più adeguato.
