L’onomastique de Dante en traduction

The history of the French translation of the Divine Comedy – for the importance of this text in French literary culture as well as for the number of retranslations which have multiplied since the romantic period – is exemplary of the history of translation as such. The case study chosen for this essay, the translation of invented proper nouns (and in particular the names of the devils present in Inf. XXI and XXII), will premise some observations on the interdiscursive relationship between the different retranslations, both from a synchronic and diachronic point of view. The analysis of a corpus made up of sixteen French translations of the Inferno published between 1965 and 2021 (1,726,649 words) was carried out using the TXM software. In particular, the study of the factorial analysis of the correspondences makes it possible to identify the most significant analogies and oppositions of the French versions of the Commedia, with the aim of carrying out a systematic study of the interdiscursive relations existing between them about the strategies translation of proper names.
