The book is the first scholarly monograph on the first five years in the career of the Italian artist Mario Schifano published in English. It revolves around the connections linking the painter with the artistic scene overseas on multiple levels. After spending a few months in New York in 1964, Schifano grew aware of his own cultural roots. Reaching maturity of style and vision resulted in the acknowledgement of his own independence as a European and Italian artist.
