The book provides an extensive account of the situation of the artistic avant-garde in Europe in the late 1950s and early 1960s. At that time, the Treaties of Rome sanctioned the beginning of the history of European Union as a political, commercial and cultural sovereign entity. The countries signing the treaties - Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - were also at the edge of artistic and cultural experimentation at that the time. With regards to visual arts, that time marked the transition from Informel to Zero tendencies.
