L’archivio privato di Piero Sanpaolesi: una fonte per la storia del restauro del Novecento

La donazione al Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze dell’archivio privato di Piero Sanpaolesi permette di rileggere l’attività dello studioso fiorentino con strumenti fino a poco tempo fa inaccessibili. L’archivio è un insieme di materiali eterogenei – quali documenti, corrispondenze, estratti, disegni e fotografie – e, assieme alla biblioteca dello studioso, consente di far luce sul modo di “operare” di uno dei protagonisti della cultura del restauro del Novecento. L’archivio ha un carattere composito anche dal punto di vista degli argomenti, poiché raccoglie documenti inerenti i diversi interessi del fondatore dell’Istituto di Restauro dei Monumenti, che vanno dallo studio delle opere d’arte figurativa alle architetture monumentali. Nella prima fase del presente studio si è indagata la consistenza dell’archivio ed è stato redatto l’inventario dei documenti in esso conservati, mantenendo inalterata la stratificazione archivistica degli stessi, da cui sono derivate le dieci aree tematiche in cui è suddiviso. Nella fase successiva è stata analizzata l’attività del professore all’estero – come studioso d’architettura, come docente e come restauratore – in particolare in due paesi del medio oriente quali la Turchia e l’Iran. In seguito sono state identificate alcune delle “carte” inerenti alla stesura di articoli scientifici e monografie. L'ultima fase ha riguardato l'individuazione dei restauri compiuti da Piero Sanpaolesi a Firenze durante la sua carriera. The donation to the University of Florence of Piero Sanpaolesi's private archive makes it possible to reread the Florentine scholar's activity with tools that were inaccessible until recently. The archive is a collection of heterogeneous materials – such as documents, correspondence, extracts, drawings and photographs – and, together with the scholar's library, sheds light on the way in which one of the protagonists of 20th century restoration culture “worked”. The archive also has a composite character from the point of view of topics, as it collects documents relating to the various interests of the founder of the Institute of Restoration of Monuments, ranging from the study of works of figurative art to monumental architecture. In the first phase of this study, the consistency of the archive was investigated and the inventory of the documents preserved in it was drawn up, maintaining the archival stratification of the same unchanged, from which the ten thematic areas into which it is divided are derived. Subsequently, the activity of the professor abroad was analyzed – as an architectural scholar, as a teacher, and as a restorer – in particular in two Middle Eastern countries such as Turkey and Iran. In the following phase, some of the “papers” inherent in the drafting of scientific articles and monographs were identified. The last phase concerned the identification of the restorations carried out by Piero Sanpaolesi in Florence during his career.
