Anima e corpo. Donne e fedi nel mondo mediterraneo (secoli XI-XVI)

Il libro è una storia sociale delle donne appartenenti alle comunità cristiane, ebraiche e islamiche del bacino euro mediterraneo nel periodo compreso tra XI e XVI sec. L’analisi della percezione del corpo femminile nelle tre culture conduce al recupero della loro considerazione nelle società di appartenenza. In tutte e tre, al netto delle differenze che pur vi furono, la sessualità e la sua gestione definirono i ruoli e il comportamento sessuale stabilì l’identità e il profilo morale delle donne. E se la loro integrità fu la condizione necessaria per il matrimonio, principale mèta per tutte, il suo speculare contrario fu il bordello. La casa familiare funzionò, tuttavia, anche come agenzia formativa: la cifra denotativa dell’acculturazione femminile fu infatti la capacità di ottenere l’istruzione necessaria attraverso percorsi privati e informali. Così incontriamo potesse, maestre di scuola, copiste, miniatrici ed esperte di saperi curativi, ma anche donne in religione. Escluse dall’esercizio attivo della liturgia e del culto, esse trovarono comunque un loro ruolo sacrale, contrapposto alla funzione, da altre rivestita, di vettore del male nella storia: streghe, fattucchiere e maghe. The book is a social history of women belonging to the Christian, Jewish and Islamic communities of the Euro-Mediterranean basin in the period between the 11th and 16th centuries. The analysis of the perception of the female body in the three cultures leads to the recovery of their consideration in the societies to which they belonged. In all three, despite the differences that existed, sexuality and its management defined roles and sexual behaviour established the identity and moral profile of women. And if their integrity was the necessary condition for marriage, the main goal for all of them, its mirror opposite was the brothel. The family home also functioned, however, as an educational agency: the denotative figure of female acculturation was in fact the ability to obtain the necessary education through private and informal paths. Thus we encounter could, schoolteachers, copyists, illuminators and experts in curative knowledge, but also women in religion. Excluded from the active exercise of liturgy and worship, they nonetheless found their own sacred role, as opposed to the function, held by others, of vectors of evil in history: witches, sorceresses and wizards.
