In Italia, pioniere di questo sotto-sotto genere è stato Eugenio Sonnino, che, in un articolo del 1989, mise in luce le tematiche demografiche trattate in alcuni grandi classici della letteratura. Affiancare la demografia allargando il panorama anche alla letteratura popolare e, in particolare, alla fantascienza è stato un passo compiuto più di recente, ed ha aperto nuovi ed immensi spazi alla critica e alla speculazione. Per restare al nostro paese, il recentissimo volume di Silvana Salvini, che affronta il tema della popolazione tra gli scrittori del XIX e XX secolo, ma non si limita a trattare alcuni grandi classici, ma “scova” i temi demografici oltre che nella letteratura “gialla”, anche nella letteratura fantascientifica e fantastica, a cui dedica un intero capitolo, il primo. Anche nei contesti internazionali, la riflessione critica sul genere ha seguito questa impronta. Per esempio, nella loro storia della fantascienza, Scholes e Rabkin già nel 1979 riportarono una prima rassegna su come gli scrittori di fantascienza avevano trattato il tema della sovrappopolazione. In alcune pubblicazioni accademiche la fantascienza è stata sfruttata sul piano demografico in vario modo: come metafora della società attuale, come mezzo per speculare sul futuro della popolazione, come occasione per scrivere di demografia divertendosi (e divertendo). For example, in their history of science fiction, Scholes and Rabkin already reported a first review in 1979. on how science fiction writers had dealt with the theme of overpopulation. In some academic publications, science fiction has been exploited on a demographic level in various ways: as a metaphor for current society, as a means of speculating on the future of the population, as an opportunity to write about demographics while having fun (and having fun).
