The general public has always held a rather negative opinion of the Italian military judiciary. Demonized by anti-militarist movements since the 1970s, in more recent years this branch of the judiciary was deeply shaken by the discovery of the “cabinet of shame” (armadio della vergogna) related to war crimes, which cast shadows on military magistrates and their work. The archives of the Military Tribunal of Bologna provide a picture of Italian society between 1945 and 1948 and shed light on a more complex historical scenario characterized by refined doctrinal reflections, efforts to harmonize different legal codes, and magistrates with a high technical profile and a staunch inclination to defend civil rights.

Abstract
The general public has always held a rather negative opinion of the Italian military judiciary. Demonized by anti-militarist movements since the 1970s, in more recent years this branch of the judiciary was deeply shaken by the discovery of the “cabinet of shame” (armadio della vergogna) related to war crimes, which cast shadows on military magistrates and their work. The archives of the Military Tribunal of Bologna provide a picture of Italian society between 1945 and 1948 and shed light on a more complex historical scenario characterized by refined doctrinal reflections, efforts to harmonize different legal codes, and magistrates with a high technical profile and a staunch inclination to defend civil rights.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
