The essay reconstructs the origin and subsequent developments of the pivotal installation "If You Lived Here...", first realized by American artist Martha Rosler at DIA in New York in 1989. By retracing the multiple facets of the project and the artist's collaboration with fellow artists, intellectuals, collectives, representatives of associations and movements, and many other figures involved in denouncing and finding a solution for the emergency of homelessness in urban contexts, the essay aims to position Rosler's commitment to social and political issues as a main source for contemporary debates around the public role of art.
