Classical Architecture in Astana: The Impact of the "Western" Tradition in Contemporary Kazakhstan

La tesi investiga i significati attribuiti al linguaggio classico in edifici costruiti in queste forme ad Astana, nuova capitale del Kazakistan dal 1997. I casi studio sono stati individuati nel Palazzo presidenziale Ak Orda (2001-04) e nel Teatro dell'Opera Astana (2011-13). Utilizzando fonti prodotte dall'impresa costruttrice e il governo, la tesi si interroga su quali valori possano spingere oggi un contesto non occidentale ad identificarsi con queste forme, riflettendo sulle implicazioni di questo fenomeno per la storiografia architettonica occidentale. This thesis investigates the meanings attributed to the classical language in buildings constructed in these forms in Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan since 1997. The case studies are identified in the Presidential Palace Ak Orda (2001-04) and the Astana Opera Theatre (2011-13). Using sources produced by the construction company and the government, the thesis questions what values might drive a non-Western context to identify with these forms today, reflecting upon the implications of this phenomenon for Western architectural historiography.
