Almost all the regions of Italy possess an extraordinarily rich variety of marble and stone, which historically have given rise to the creative expressions of craftsmen, sculptors, architects and designers, in countless applications and on the most diverse of levels. These are materials that have fuelled – and still implement today – numerous unique design and production cultures, containing valuable elements of identity, not only for collective, local imaginaries, but also for contemporary global perceptions and awareness. This volume aim to furnish a significant cross-section of these material cultures and stone identities, analysing the geographical location of the quarries, the technical and expressive characteristics of stones, the work processes and historical and innovative applications.
