Modern rail transport systems feature an increasing level of complexity. One of the main reasons for this growth is the tendency to automate delicate control and supervisory functions through heterogeneous distributed computer systems. In this article we address the topic of system modelling by means of advanced and innovative techniques in support of the holistic evaluation of safety, security and reliability of railway systems in different phases of their life-cycle, presenting recent experiences and interesting research areas in this field.
