Glaucoma is a group of degenerative conditions affecting the optic nerve, primarily marked by dysfunction in the ciliary processes and trabecular meshwork (TM), located in the anterior chamber of the eye. This dysfunction results in an imbalance between the production and drainage of aqueous humour (AH), which subsequently leads to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). If ocular hypertension (OHT) remains untreated, it causes diminished local perfusion and chronic ischaemia, ultimately resulting in the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) through mechanisms such as autophagy and/or apoptosis.
