The books takes its origin from the activity conducted by Fondazione De Fornaris in Turin in more than forty years, supporting the programs of GAM, the museum of modern and contemporary art of the city of Turin, and acquiring works for the museum collection. By comparing two works - by an artist of the first half and another of the second half of the 20th century respectively - gathered around a common them, the book aims to shed light on the interpretation that Italian artists provided of major subjects in the history of art and culture of the 20th century till today. More specifically, each chapter is devoted to a theme - Monument, Matter and Representation - and focuses respectively on the comparisons established between works by Giuseppe Penone and Arturo Martini, Enrico Prampolini and Alberto Burri, and Giulio Paolini and Giorgio de Chirico. By looking closely at the works of the aforementioned artists and drawing connections and comparisons between them, the books aims to show the relevance and fruitfulness of studies of tradition and legacy of practices and visions as applied to the evolution of modern Italian art, and implicitly bears witness to the significance of the activity of promotion and patronage conducted in the public sphere by a foundation like Fondazione De Fornaris.
