In today's multicultural and global world being bilingual and even multilingual is the most natural phenomenon, including both, individuals and entire communities. Bilingual Polish immigrants in Italy are in the situation of Polish-Italian language contact, which the most important consequence is self-recognizability of cultural identity and its transformation. The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between the type of bilingualism and the type of cultural identity and its transformations. Subjects of the study are group of Polish-Italian bilinguals who belong to the post-Solidarity emgiration living in Italy. The result of the study show that in order to examine the migrant’s cultural identity formation processi t is necessary to consider many factors, mainly psicological ones. Therefore, in addition to the four identity attitudes determined by J.F. Hamers and M. Blanc, the author proposes the fifth one – cultural awarness not oriented nationally. The study is of the interdisciplinary character as the autor refers to etnography of speaking and linguistic anthropology.
