Modernität und Internationalität in Johann Peter Hebels Erzählen. Eine narratologische Studie.

Die Dissertation untersucht das erzählerische Werk Johann Peter Hebels unter den Leitbegriffen Modernität und Internationalität. Im Zentrum steht eine narratologische Analyse ausgewählter Kurzprosa aus dem Rheinländischen Hausfreund und dem Schatzkästlein, wobei Hebels spezifische Erzählweise im Spannungsfeld von Tradition und Innovation verortet wird. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Gattungshybridisierung zwischen Anekdote, Schwank, Exempel, Fabel und Novelle, sowie dem Einsatz von Kippfiguren, narrativer Ambiguität und pointierter Rahmung. Hebels Geschichten werden als eigenständiger Beitrag zur Entwicklung der modernen Kurzgeschichte gelesen, zugleich aber auch in ihrer interkulturellen Dimension erschlossen – etwa im Rückgriff auf Boccaccio oder orientalische Erzähltraditionen. Durch die Rezeption bei Autoren wie Kafka, Benjamin, Bloch oder Hofmannsthal wird schließlich die anhaltende Aktualität von Hebels Erzählkunst greifbar. Die Arbeit verbindet gattungsästhetische, erzähltheoretische und literaturgeschichtliche Perspektiven. This dissertation explores the narrative work of Johann Peter Hebel through the lenses of modernity and internationality. It combines narratological, philological, and comparative approaches to examine Hebel’s short prose—particularly the Kalendergeschichten from the Rheinländischer Hausfreund and texts from the Schatzkästlein. The study begins with a survey of Hebel’s reception in Germany and Italy, focusing on his rediscovery in the German, Austrian, and Swiss literary contexts of the early twentieth century. It then situates Hebel’s storytelling within the broader intercultural landscape of southern Germany in the early 19th century, with connections to France, Switzerland, and Italy. A central section offers detailed analyses of eight representative stories that exemplify Hebel’s poetics of “schöne Sinnlichkeit” (refined sensuality) and his use of narrative irritation as a pedagogical strategy to foster critical thinking. The final part positions Hebel’s narrative art within the genealogy of the German-language Kurzgeschichte, identifying him as a foundational figure in the development of the modern short story.
