I tra mari. La Marina russa tra Baltico, mar Nero e Mediterraneo (1500-1827)

Si parte dal sogno del primo zar, Ivan IV il “Terribile”, per giungere a quel 1827 che con la battaglia di Navarino segna l’apice della presenza russa nel Mediterraneo. In mezzo, quasi trecento anni di costruzione imperiale attuata dai Romanov che le pagine ripercorrono, dai grandi sforzi di Pietro il Grande per dotarsi di flotte e di porti soprattutto nel Baltico, a quelli di Caterina II che, dopo l’insediamento nel mar Nero, conduce la Russia nelle ambite acque calde e la impone all’attenzione dell’Europa. It begins with the dream of the first tsar, Ivan IV the "Terrible," and reaches 1827, the year that marked the pinnacle of Russian presence in the Mediterranean with the Battle of Navarino. In between, the pages retrace nearly three hundred years of imperial construction undertaken by the Romanovs, from Peter the Great's great efforts to equip himself with fleets and ports, especially in the Baltic, to those of Catherine II, who, after establishing herself in the Black Sea, led Russia into the coveted warm waters and brought it to Europe's attention. The Mediterranean, multifaceted, heated, and complicated in the first three decades of the nineteenth century, became the fluid space in which Tsars Alexander and Nicholas attempted to play a hegemonic game, the traces of which are still before our eyes.
